Why does LUSH discontinue products?
Products, wherever they are discontinued, go because Lush makes everything in small batches which have to be sold by a certain date. If they do not sell quickly enough then some of the batch might get wasted – or given away – but either way it loses money and as a smallish business, things are priced based on our selling everything we make, not a fraction of it. To make even smaller batches would not be at all cost effective (same amount of effort to make less stuff – like making cakes) so if things don’t sell a certain amount then they will be discontinued. We’d rather stay in business and lose a few products than not sell things, lose money and close down. To add to the pressures, both our stores and mail order have limited shelf-space and, with the new products we introduce every year, we must make room for the new products. The best criteria we can think of is a products sale performance. Sorry if any of your favorites are discontinued but we have to look at the bigger picture.
