Why does lobelia dry out by August?

The nature of lobelia is that they fill out really nicely in the spring and early summer, but unfortunately by the time we hit August and the summer full of hot temperatures and sunny days, they just cannot handle it. They seem to have a shorter life span that way, shorter than other annuals.
