Why does Kindles for Troops (K4T) only accept the Kindle 2 and Kindle 3?

The original Kindle and the Kindle DX are both great reading devices, however we did not believe they were the right choices for Kindles For Troops. We felt the design of the Kindle 2 was more suitable than either of those devices for troops in the field. The Kindle 2 has a slimmer profile than the Kindle 1, and a smaller form factor than the DX, and is not susceptible to a common issue with the K1 where the back of the device could, at times, fall off. The Kindle 2 firmware also continues to be supported by Amazon, whereas the Kindle 1’s firmware has not been actively upgraded with recent OS updates. Additionally, it is important for us as an all-volunteer organization to do everything we can to drive economies of scale, and standardizing on a single e-reader for this program enables us to grow this program at a much faster rate than if we supported multiple device models.
