Why does it take longer if there is a diagnosis of dementia/Alzheimers?
If we are working with a single/widowed claimant and the VA Physicians Report indicates that the claimant has Dementia/ Alzheimers and cannot handle his or her own finances without assistance, the VA will not release the benefit directly to that claimant. A fiduciary (which is usually a family member) must be appointed and that named fiduciary must go through additional steps which prolongs the process. There are ways to circumvent this process if there is a conservator or if we have a married couple where the non-veteran spouse can receive the funds on behalf of the claimant.
