Why does it cost so much to build a proton therapy center?
The building required to house the equipment takes about 18 months to design and build and is about 90,000 square feet in size. An additional 18 months is needed to install, commission, integrate and test equipment and safety systems to ensure that clinical specifications are met. The building and equipment must be precisely integrated to deliver treatment to the patient with the utmost precision. The highly complex equipment will allow the physicians to direct proton beams to with submillimeter precision of the targeted cancer tumor.
