Why does hail make its particular sound?
Hails particular sound is the combination of many hailstones falling through trees, on roofs and on the ground at some distance upwind from you. The mingled noises made by these fallen hailstones arrive to your ears ahead of the storm itself. Once the storm arrives where you are, the patter of individual stones drowns out the noise from distant hailstones, some two or three kilometres away.
