Why does Green Energy cost more?
Green energy is more expensive to produce than dirty power, but is more valuable as it does not pollute our air or our water. We pay our generators a premium for green electricity, which acknowledges its greater value and signals the market to make more. Bullfrog Power also uses a portion of the green premium to help develop new, renewable generation. New turbines have already been commissioned as a direct result of the demand for green power from Bullfrog’s commercial and residential customers, and more will follow as our customer base grows. In the longer term, with advances in renewable power generation technologies, and with increased demand for renewables, production is likely to become more cost-effective. The price difference between green and dirty power should therefore reduce over time.
Although renewable sources like sunlight and wind are free, the technology used to capture the energy they produce is still more expensive than traditional power generation methods. Additionally, the renewable sources have relatively low availability. For example, the wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine. Increased demand for Green Energy may lead to expanded power production capacity and eventually to lower costs. How do I sign up for Green Energy? Georgia Power residential and business customers may sign up for Green Energy online or via phone at 1-800-735-7791. Green Energy will simply add $3.50 (per block) to your monthly bill.
