I think there’s a difference between drugs as a stimulant to the senses and drugs as an abuse of the system. I don’t think that music is SO much better when you get high… perhaps its just that that’s what it takes for some people to actually be able to enter into the music. The best music I’ve ever experienced has been when I’m sober… and I’ve done a lot of drugs. Okay, I want to amend that. Listening to Pink Floyd’s “Umma Gumma” album when dropping acid was probably one of the best musical experiences I’ve ever had… and that was because it allowed me to freely associate sounds and colors in a way that I’m not able to do normally. Synesthesia, they call it. Man, it was unforgettable! Other than that (grin) I’ve found that I experience music in the most meaningful fashion when I’m sober.
