There are many adults with autism as autism does not go away with age. Autism is a pervasive development disorder which means you are born with it and will have it for the rest of your life. The reason not so many adults have a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder is because it is a relatively newly discovered condition. When the adults of today were children ASD was not used as much as not a lot was known about the condition. These children were given other labels that we would not use today or would come under the heading of an ASD. My own father has been seen as eccentric all his life but at the age of 70 was diagnosed as having Asperger syndrome. We know understand his eccentric behaviours and can to a point understand them.
