Why does emergent theology make some Christians nervous?
Emergent thinking basically says that every assumption we make is limited and conditional. That doesn’t mean it’s not useful and beneficial and helpful. You can certainly function with it. It has everything necessary for how one is going to live their life, but it also means it doesn’t get to have a pass just because it’s a religious expression. Whenever those of us in this emergent world tend to say: “Well, I’m sure if I’d grown up with the same experiences you did and had the same temperament you have, and the same proclivities that you manifest, then I would conclude just as you have. But I don’t have that same situation, and therefore I’m probably not going to conclude just the way you’ve concluded,” it makes people say: “Well, then, what in the world does religion have to offer if it has to be re-cast in every single person’s situation?
