Why does eBay not have any major competitors when it must be fantastically profitable?

Because they did it first and they did it right. Sure someone else can come in if they want (and many have) although they have to advertise their site which is costly to use and the inventory will be minute compared to the grand old ebay where everything is available. With that much competition it forces the sellers to offer some of the best pricing available. So yes ebay can be blown out of the water, but someone has to be willing to invest millions of dollars simply to try to do so. But the world knows where to go… eBay. When we shop we want selection and ebay has got it.
