While the holidays themselves are Christian, people often blend secular elements into the celebrations of said holidays. While these secular activities are based in those pass times of pagan, they are not religious practises of Christians. It’s also important to remember that some of these practised seen as pagan are not practised everywhere. There are parts of Europe that didn’t celebrate Christmas with Chistmas trees until more recent times. They still celebrated Christmas however because the wanted to mark the birth of Christ. There is nothing wrong with allowing people to keep old practises. The Church saw no reason to replace a people’s entire culture. If something didn’t conflict with Christian beliefs, why bother saying “you can’t do that anymore” when it could just be kept as a secular activity?
