Why does different types of vehicle engine produce different exhaust emissions?

OK lets see if i can explain this car exhaust has something in it called hydrocarbons that is basically unburned gas that is the main part that is bad for us its called a carcinogen (a cancer causing agent) some very efficient engines have a great way to recycle this unburned gas one way is a catalytic converter what it does is allows the hydrocarbons to be converted back into gas and burned in the engine , it converts the hydrocarbons through a reaction between different metals in the catalytic converter and the exhaust ,this chemical reaction turns it back into gas. there are other ways for this same process to occur but I would need a mechanic text book around me to explain it. But anyway some cars do this better than others also if oil leaks into the gas the exhaust will also be worse because the oil is burning too.
