Why does DEVONthink not import my Office or iWork files?
Unfortunately, applications like Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint as well as iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote,) Ragtime or Mellel uses a proprietary file format that can only be read by those applications. Apple, for example, does not provide any libraries that we could use to read, analyze, or display those files, and that is true for most other proprietary file formats, too. However, you can, of course, import these files even though DEVONthink cannot display or search them. Just make sure that ‘Unknown file types’ is checked in Preferences > Import. Double-clicking them from within DEVONthink opens them in their original application.
