Why does cough medicine taste so bad?
Well, two basic reasons. First, the actual active ingredient tastes bitter by nature. It’s about all the companies can do to actually manage to cover it up as much as they do. Second, if they made it taste too good, you would be more likely to take too much of it. It would also prove too tempting for small children to drink. The nasty taste actually doesn’t prevent them trying a swallow, but it does help discourage them from wanting a second round. And a good many will simply spit it out. You can try a few tricks to help it go down easier though. If you aren’t diabetic, you can try coating the tongue with sugar, which will then cover the majority of the bitter taste. Or you can suck on ice cube first, dulling the taste sensation of the tongue, and swallow quick. And for the chocoholics among us and my kids- I mix it in a big spoonful of chocolate syrup.
