Bruce Willis’ character, Butch, had just recently reneged on a business deal with Marcellus Wallace. Butch was supposed to fake a knock out in a boxing match fixed by Wallace. Instead, Butch planned to win the fight and get rich at the same time. He won the fight and escaped the arena before Wallace’s men, Jules and Vincent, could get to him. Butch hid out overnight but, by unfortunate circumstances, he had to return to his apartment the next morning. Vincent was at the apartment waiting for him while reading a book in the bathroom and he did not hear Butch come in. Butch found Vincent’s gun in the kitchen and he heard the toilet flush, so he knew that he was not alone in the apartment. When Vincent came out of the bathroom…whammo.
