Why does baking soda and vinegar make a Reaction?
Vinegar is an acid which means it has excess hydrogen ions in it. Hydrogens are positive which means they are looking for electrons from something to neutralize themselves. Baking soda is a basic compound. This means it has excess OH- ions it it. This is water minus one hydrogen. It is looking to gain a hydrogen or something positive. So when you put the two together they get what they need from each other– the vinegar gets the electron from the baking soda’s excess OH- ‘s, and the baking soda’s get the positive hydrogen charge from the vinegar to neutralize itself. Everything that reacts tries to get to a lower energy. The baking soda and vinegar have more energy before they react than when they react.
