Why does Australia suck at 7s rugby now?
Bill is correct, 7’s rugby is mainly used by Australia as a building block for the future top rugby players, most of the guys who play 7’s for Australia are under 21yrs old. Australia use 7’s to give the young players more experience at playing rugby at a higher level (even tho 7’s is completely different to the 15 man game). They also have some specialist 7’s players who aren’t quite good enough to make the super 14 teams. The ARU rewards those guys for hanging around in Australia & helping to make club rugby, in Australia a higher level of competition, instead of heading over to Europe to play. I used to work with a guy called Nick Gregorski (spelling?), he played a lot of 7’s for Australia, He retired 2 years after the western force joined the super 14, poor bastard, if the western force were in the competition earlier, he may have played super rugby.
