Why does Australia continue to send live exports to the Middle East?
Livestock exports are important to regional and rural Australia, employing 13,000 people and adding $1.8 billion to the economy. Many farming families depend entirely on live exports for their livelihood. Some markets prefer to import live animals rather than frozen or chilled meat. This is for various reasons, including a lack of suitable chilling facilities, or cultural/religious practices. If Australia withdrew from live exports, these markets would simply source livestock from other countries where animal welfare is given a much lower priority. Our involvement in the trade to the Middle East allows us to help bring positive change and improve animal welfare conditions there. We lead the world in animal welfare practices, so it’s important that we assist other countries in this area.
