Why does Antigone feel that it is her duty to bury her brother, Polynices?
1.) He’s her brother and she wanted him to have a decent burial despite his betrayal of Thebes. 2.) I think that according to the ancient Greeks, if a dead body was not given a proper burial, the soul never moved on to the Land of the Dead and it was stuck floating around in the world of the living –– where it didn’t belong. Antigone, being Polyneices’ sister, did not want this to happen so she decided to bury him. 3.) Antigone believed that the gods would be angry if she didn’t bury him, and valued the laws of the gods over the laws of Creon.
