Why does an aqueous solution of an acid conduct electricity?
When acid is added to water then it is called as an aqueous solution of an acid. In an aqueous solution, acid ionizes completely to form cation (positive ion) and anion (negative ion). These ions carry the charge towards opposite electrodes. As anions move towards anode and cations move towards cathode. Due to this fact, acids conduct electricity in aqueous medium. e.g. HCl ionises to form H+ and Cl- ions. Here hydrogen ion Cl- is the cation and chloride ion Cl- is the anion. Similarly, HNO3 ionises to form H+ and NO3- ions. Q4. Give two important uses of washing soda and baking soda. Answer: 1. Uses of washing soda: (i) It is used in glass, soap and paper industries. (ii) It can be used as a cleaning agent for domestic purposes and also for removing permanent hardness of water. 2. Uses of baking soda: (i) It is used in soda-acid fire extinguishers. (ii) It is used as an ingredient in antacids, as it neutralizes excess acid in the stomach. Q5. What is meant by water of crystallization
