Why does all my english coursework revolve around rapist, murderers and general sickos?
I did English at university and it doesn’t change much. A good percentage of English literature not to mention the Classical literature that underpins most of it- (have you tried reading Ovid? I recommend “Tereus, Procne and Philomela” as a case in point) is concerned with the dark side of humanity- rape, violence, cannabilism, incest- you name it. This is why it always amuses me when older people moan about the violence in Tarantino films saying “It wasn’t like that in my day.” Actually it kinda was- “Reservoir Dogs” is NOTHING compared to “Titus Andronicus” (rape, extreme violence. numerous chopped off limbs, eating your own sons in a pie…) Some of Shakespeare’s plays are incredibly violent. (Like Ulysees says, violence sells, and Shakespeare marketed to the masses) The thing with art is that part of its role in society is to help us understand and express our feelings aboutthe human condition.
