Why Does Airline Food Have A Reputation Of Being Awful?
The term ‘airline food’ is used as a pejorative by many people when describing meals that taste bland. This is no surprise, as meals served in the economy class aboard most full-service airlines do tend to be a bit on the tasteless side and are, indeed, often best described as bland. This is not, however, because airlines hire incompetent chefs, or because the stewardesses throw together the meals on the cheap at the back of the plane. Airline food is intended to be bland for a number of reasons. First, airlines must be sure to serve meals that most people can consume. As such, food must not be too spicy and should not usually contain overly exotic, or foreign flavours that some might find unusual or even repulsive. The typical meal in economy class consists of a choice of chicken, beef, or pork, and sometimes pasta, instead of things like shrimp, squid, frogs or juicy blood sausages, as these are delicacies, but they do not appeal to many people.
