Why does Adrian College seek accreditation with the HLC?
There are a number of reasons. It provides quality assurance for stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, Adrian College, employers, and the state legislature. At another level, accreditation serves a “gatekeeping” function. Unaccredited schools are not eligible for many kinds of federal funds, and many colleges and universities won’t accept transfer credits or recognize academic degrees from unaccredited institutions. Finally, the self-study process is informative to the campus and it is helpful and useful to get external perspectives for institutional improvement.
