Why does actual evapotranspiration (ET) sometimes exceed potential evapotranspiration (PET)?
Four of VIC’s six types of potential evapotranspiration (PET) estimate PET from vegetative cover. For these calculations, VIC only estimates potential transpiration. However, actual ET contains contributions from both transpiration and evaporation from canopy interception storage. Thus, the total of actual transpiration and canopy evaporation can exceed estimated PET. We are considering adding potential canopy evaporation to the model in the future.
