Why does a paramedic truck respond to some ambulance calls?
Paramedics are called in certain serious injuries or illnesses where their special skills and equipment may be needed. Paramedics are trained to a higher level than the Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Technicians. The paramedics can administer drugs and IV’s. They also can operate directly through instructions from the Emergency Room physician in charge. The paramedics currently are provided by Action Ambulance Company and are dispatched simultaneously from a location in Burlington. The patient is billed by Action Ambulance for the paramedic services, and the town is reimbursed for services we provide.. This advanced level of patient care is often life saving and frequently lessens the pain and length of hospitalization for the person treated.
