Why does a cold automobile battery may not generate enough energy to crank the engine on cold morning?
More significantly than the battery being weakened, the engine oil is cold, increasing friction and making the engine harder to turn. In extremely cold climates a crankcase heater may be needed to keep the engine limber enough to turn. The battery will still work without heating it unless you are in Siberia.
