The world’s largest religions ~ Christianity, Islam and Hinduism all have long traditions of regarding women as ‘unclean’ or ‘impure’ during certain times in the menstrual cycle, after giving birth and on some other occasions. Many smaller religions, including Judaism and the numerically significant animistic and traditional religions of the African continent, have similar traditions. It is difficult at this point to say with any certainty just how these traditions began, but certainly, in most religious traditions there are a number of things considered ‘unclean’ or ‘impure’.
