WHY DO WOLVES HOWL AT THE MOON?
Wolves don’t only howl at the moon, they howl for other reasons too. They’re part of the dog family and live in packs. They use howling to coordinate and communicate. Since the moon is out, it’s nighttime and even though they can see in the dark better than us, relaying messages to the pack may be a bigger necessity than in the daytime. Sometimes when a wolf starts howling, others will join in. The lower “ranking” members in a pack may be punished for joining in, so it may reflect hierarchy as well.
