Why do whites that adopt black children tend to adopt Ethiopian instead of African American?
People think that when they’re adopting from foreign countries that they’re adopting children that have nothing wrong with them except for the fact that they have no parents. There is a perception that children put of for adoption in the US are the children of drug addicts or are physically and mentally handicapped. Yes, there are children waiting for adoption in the US, and many of them have special needs (physical, behavioural, etc,), come from abusive backgrounds, or are part of a set of siblings who don’t want to be separated. Nice little white babies get adopted very easily. There is also the issue that after adopting an American baby that the parents will fight you for custody. When you adopt an Ethiopian or Chinese orphan, you really don’t have those kinds of problems. Many women from these countries, such as the mother of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, are happy that people are willing to provide a good future for their kids.
