Why do wetlands need water during a drought – isn’t it natural for them to dry out?
Before our river systems were regulated with dams and other regulating structures it was natural for wetlands to have periods of little or no inundation during dry seasons, and periods of flooding during wet periods. The flow of the rivers is now regulated and the water that used to pass through the wetlands is shared across many users causing a reduction in the extent and frequency of inundation and an increase in the time between periods of inundation for many areas.
