Why do we use coke instead of charcoal nowadays as a source of carbon to reduce haematite?

Charcoal is obtained from wood and needs felling of trees and depleating forests. Charcoal is expensive too. So charcoal is not a good choice. I think that charcoal has not been in used in the past. Coke is made from coal by heating to high temperature in absence of air. It needs a high grade coal to give the quality of coke needed for reduction of haematite. I hope you are not confused with coke which is a cola drink.
