Why do we need a redevelopment scheme that includes commercial enterprise in the New Crystal Palace?
Bromley Council as the park landowner and the LDA, which has an option to acquire the park, want a viable and financially sustainable Crystal Palace Park. We understand that neither has sufficient funds to finance the park’s annual maintenance quite apart from any improvements. This is why the LDA is proposing a new residential scheme within the park. They need capital income to help fund the improvements and revenue to service the maintenance costs. The capital from the residential scheme (some 15m) falls well short of the sum needed for the improvements to they are proposing for the park (some 67m). The LDA has a problem therefore and has sought to part solve it by proposing to introduce commercially based development into the park. Their proposal therefore sets a precedent for proposing development within the park.
