Be glad that it takes years. Would you want to be someone sentenced to death for a crime you didn’t comitt and be taken straighaway from your conviction to the death chamber and executed? I am not saying this happens often but every so often we screw it up and convict the wrong person. The time it takes for a criminal to be executed is the time it takes to exhaust all of their appeals. For some iot seems like it takes an eternity. Don’t get me wrong I am in full support of capital punishment but only if the right person is going to be executed. I would feel horrible if someone was executed who was really innocent.
