Why do waves slow down in shallow water?

If they just slowed down, you would have a bottle-neck somewhere along the shallowing. The waves do slow down but change their shape and become taller and then eventually break. See the site below. Now for what it’s worth, science is not always fact, alot of it is theory. Remember, scientists thought the world was flat and claimed all kinds of proof that it was. That is not to say Scientists haven’t clocked the speed of waves, but don’t take everything you hear as the fact. Last year, my high school daughter had a science project due that was a styrofoam ball with a wedge cut out. She had to paint the layers of the earth, starting with the crust, I don’t remember the names of the layers, but I told her to ask the teacher how scientists knew the layers since we have never drilled through the crust? I mean it makes just as much sense to me that the center of the earth is filled with ping pong balls.
