Why do washing machines generally load from the top, while dryers load from the front?
This varies between countries. In the UK, nearly all washing machines are front loading. I know that is not the case elsewhere – I believe much of the continent favours front loaders. It seems to ba a matter of custom and taste. From an engineering point of view, top loading strikes me as much more sensible, because the drum is balanced on it base rather than to one side. However, in many UK houses the dryer is stacked on top of the washer, which therefore has to be front loading. In the US, larger houses make this less necessary – which does not explain why the continent favour top loaders.
