Why do Vlad the Impaler and the Spanish Inquisition get such a bad rap?
I think there is a legitimate point in here somewhere, but the attempt to excuse any horrific event by saying it resulted in something good, is to misunderstand the nature of moral action. Also, assuming you are Christian, you should keep in mind that God always brings good out of evil, but this does not excuse the evil. Yes, there is a lot of misunderstanding, especially about the real events of the Spanish Inquisition. Most of the bogus history, which is what most people know, is based on something historians call “The Black Legend”, which dates from the time of the Wars of Religion about 200 years after the monarch of Spain instituted an inquisition. The two years that the Spanish monarchy ran the inquisition were monstrous. BUT the pope called for an end to the atrocities and the Church took over the Inquistion at that point.
