Why do vehicles need gears and/or transmissions?
Vehicles need transmissions in order to achieve responsive acceleration as well as use the engines power in an efficient manner. Smaller gears are good for acceleration but can’t hold a high top speed, which is why they are good for starting to move, however as the vehicle travels faster, a bigger gear can hold a higher top speed therefore allowing the car to accelerate further.
