Why do vampires hate the wooden cross?

In the most accepted mythology, it is assumed that vampires lack souls because their soul was sent to Hell when they became evil creatures of the night. (Thus, they can easily feed off humans and act on their most primal instincts since they experience no remorse or guilt.) Because of this, vampires are more closely linked with the Devil than with anything having to do with God or Heaven. The cross is holy and represents all of these pure ideas that are the antithesis of vampires. It’s not a surprise then that these symbols should bring harm to those who are evil. (It’s also a beautiful metaphor since in a way God and religion will protect you from evil things.)

Vampire do not have the ability to effect emotional growth. The person that they were when they died is pretty much who they will be through-out their existence. So what ever quirks they had as a person will remain with them as a vampire. Dracula had many of these. He couldn’t enter a building unless invited, couldn’t cross moving water under his own volition, couldn’t stand the sight of religious icons.
