Why do use whole wheat products, brown rice and raw sugar?
100% whole wheat flours, breads and pastas are composed of starch and fiber. These wonderful nutrients have been removed from white bread, ‘wheat’ bread, all purpose flour and most pastas — without the nutrients these items become “empty calories.” A similar thing happens to rice. Brown rice is full of bran and germ – the nutrients in rice. These healthy nutrients have been removed from the rice to make it white. Likewise, White “table” sugar is ‘refined’ sugar and ‘raw’ sugar has not been refined. During the “refining process” white sugar is extracted, boiled, centrifuged, spun, washed and then filtered. Most if not all of its nutrients are lost, making white sugar another “empty calorie” food. If that’s not bad enough, white “refined” sugar is chemically manipulated or processed through bones to become white! My food philosophy is “Eat real food, don’t settle for food-like substances.
The more natural and whole a food is the better it is for you. 100% whole wheat flours, breads and pastas and brown rice still contain all of their nutrients. Their white counterparts have been stripped of most, if not all of their nutrients which is why they are often referred to as “empty calories.” Refined sugar and fake sugars are also heavily processed but raw sugars and natural sweeteners such as pure maple syrup and agave are full of nutrients. My motto is “Eat real food — don’t settle for unhealthy, food-like substances.
