Why do USA and Aus vets recommend cats stay indoors?
AUSTRALIA – cat are not welcome in Australia because they don’t belong there and have no natural predators. Cats are not indigenous to Australia and have decimated some other species on that Continent. Before the 1800s cats did not exist on the Australian Continent until they were introduced by settlers. As a result, in parts of Australia, cats are hunted as pests if allowed to roam. NORTH AMERICA – In parts of NA cats are at risk if they are let outside. There are a number of larger predators that will take a cat and in urban centres there is too much traffic and too many ‘sick’ individuals that are a hazard to cats. I live in Central Canada and my cats DO get out all day. nobody here has inside cats because we use cats for pest eradication. My one cat has been attacked twice by the local wildlife but the benefits of having an outside cat here outweigh the risks. EDIT – and you are correct on one point. Most of us North Americans are GREAT HONKING NITS ( and proud of it ). That is wha
