Why do transition metals have several oxidation states?

0

Transition metals have multiple Oxidation state due to their outermost electrons being in the `d’ orbitals…3d or 4d etc. Now there are five d orbital, each having the ability to be occupied by 2 electrons. Since each orbital is equal in energy it is fairly easy for an atom to lose multiple electron from the d orbital sometimes even all.
