Why do toilets smell like toilets?
Maybe it’s just me but has anyone else wondered why attention to detail seems to stop at the architect’s blueprint? On a visit to the Gents in a new hotel in Galway, I will admit that architecturally, aesthetically and design-wise, these washrooms could not be faulted, but…and there invariably is a but….the toilets smelt like toilets! But they are toilets I hear you shout. Sure, but who wants to spend a penny surronded by the odours of those who have deposited their pennies before us? Closer inspection revealed a non-functioning air-freshener unit, no urinal blocks, no flowers or anything that might replace unwanted odours. After spending so much money planning, building, marketing and operating such a business, why not spend a few euros in the areas that your regular customers are likely to remember.
