You might be willing to give up your last Rolo but we bet you can’t say the same for your toddler! Right now, sharing isn’t really high on her list of priorities. You only have to invite fellow toddlers past the front door and your little one gets all territorial. “Toddlers are still acquiring the social skills required to share,” explains educational psychologist Margaret McAllister. “They play alongside other children rather than with them and when another toddler barges in on their territory, it can feel like an encroachment. You are your toddler’s best role model and at this young age, it’s best not to leave them to their own devices for very long.” To help her learn about sharing, suggest she has the toy for five minutes and when you call time, she can pass it on to her friend. Or why not plan ahead and organise some inclusive activities you can all do together like baking or card making. And remember this phase will pass – one day you might just get that Rolo!
