Why do they paint the bottoms of some palm trees white?

I think that all trees were whitewashed white back in the years of the early automobile so the drivers could see them at night– their headlights were no better than candles. Then as headlights got better– the owners decided they like the white trunks on their property. Oh– whitewash was also used as a insect deterrent– applied thickly it filled those cracks/holes in the bark. AND one more reason– the whitewash prevented bark burn from the sun. There you are– memorabilia from the old!
