Why do they make you take a glucose test at 28 weeks prenant?
its just to check for gestational diabetes. Its not a bad test, you just have to wait for an hour. So bring a book, it can go by very slow. Avoid eating excessive sugar before you take the test, this can throw your results. Your doctor may even give you a diet guideline to follow. I failed the 1 hour twice, and recently took the 3 hour. Im actually waiting for the results, but the doctor hasnt called back yet. gestational diabetes can be controlled by a healthy diet, and is necessary to avoid your baby getting too much sugar and growing too large. Just keep in mind, if you are diagnosed, it is one of the most common things that occurs during pregnancy, and usually goes away after the baby is born! GOOD LUCK!
To screen for gestational diabetes. My doctor forgot until 33 weeks and when I went in yesterday, she had ordered the wrong test (fasting instead of loading) or given me the wrong instructions. I ended up not able to take either version of the glucose test and told them I would be rejecting the test, because I don’t have any ability to come back before my maternity leave in three weeks, since their lab hours conflict with my schedule. However, it definitely is a good idea to get the test, especially if you aren’t one of the low-risk categories of people. Gestational diabetes can cause some complications and really large babies if not managed by diet.
They would only make you take a test if you were high risk of getting gestational diabetes, not everyone gets it, I have a history of big babies (10lb 110z) and this is another big baby so I had to have the test and thankfully my sugar levels came back perfect I had to fast and go to the hospital at 8.30am and get blood taken, drink a full bottle of lucozade and come back 2 hours later and get blood taken again, the results were back in a few days
It must depend on the doctor, if others are saying their doctors do not test for it unless you are “at risk” for having gestational diabetes. I know all of the doctor’s in my OB”s practice routinely test everyone for it. It’s important, as another poster mentioned, because they have to be prepared if you are going to deliver a very large baby. Sometimes it warrants a C-section…
