Why do they insert a catheter through the jugular vein in the neck?
There are two major veins that enter the heart, the jugular vein from your head and the vena cava from the rest of your body. There are certain places on the inside surface of the heart that can t be reached by a catheter inserted through the vena cava. The easiest way to get to those spots is through the vein in the neck.
