Why do they have big eyes? Are they just wishing they looked like Americans?
No they are not doing that to be like Americans. There are actually a lot more styles then big eyes but that does seem to have become dominate today. I believe that it started back with Tezuka Osamu who was influenced somewhat by American animation of the time like Disney, WB (Looney Toons etc), Betty Boop etc. and they found bigger eyes makes emotions easier to express on screen. Interesting to note that American animation was later very influenced by anime the most obvious example being Lion King taken from an earlier anime by Tezuka Osamu. Do you have an email list?
