Why do the male chicken have no commercial value and are generally destroyed soon after hatching?

Often, male chicks are “destroyed” (actually, they’re smothered to death) right after birth and then the bodies are frozen and sold to companies who provide food to things like reptiles like snakes and turtles. Roosters are, in fact, very likely to be the birds we buy at the grocery – the hens are kept to lay eggs until they get to old to reproduce, at which point they end up slaughtered as well.
