Why do the gas giant planets have such striking bands?
Bands can be detected in the Earth’s atmosphere and seen in the photos of the gas giants — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These bands are especially visible on Jupiter where organic compounds in the atmosphere color the clouds. Also, the gas giant planets rotate faster and are larger than the Earth. Both of these enhance the Coriolis force, resulting in a greater banding effect.
